• Invented in the late 17th century by monks of a Spanish monastery, cologne was initially referred to as “fragrant water.” After the recipe for its production was passed on to a spice merchant in Cologne, it gradually transformed into a popular perfume brand among the nobility known as “Eau de Cologne.” It wasn’t until the second half of the 18th century that it received its “true” name, Eau de Cologne, from French perfumers and gained widespread popularity among men.
